We all know that oils and water don't mix right? - if this is news to you, you've just learnt something new.
Have you ever made your own perfume or room spray, you were so excited for it and then all you essential oils lifted to the top and you could never get them to blend nicely in the bottle? yeah same!
I was always told to use salt or witch hazel to blend my oils but neither of those really did the job. This was when i started looking into how to make the oils blend with the water properly because there had to be a way to do it.
This was when i learnt about emulsifying. A term i hadn't heard of before, but did a bit of digging on. If this is a new word for you too, and emulsifier is a substance that will help blend your oils with water evenly and stop them from separating.
The best natural options we have found are liquid Castile soap, aloe vera gel, honey and high proof alcohol. All are great but i personally prefer the liquid Castile soap option. If you don't have any yet, you can grab some from our store here.
Emulsifying your oils isn't only great for when using the product, but it also helps with safety, making sure that the oils are evenly distributed and you're not accidentally spraying straight oils onto your skin and clothes (oil stains on clothes are no joke!)
Essential oils are powerful, we need to treat them with respect. This means doing your own research and making sure that you're diluting your oils correctly but also blending them correctly and safely.
Not using an emulsifier when blending your essential oils with water runs the risk of skin irritation, skin burns, etc. Nobody needs that!
You do not need to emulsify your oils if you're adding them to carrier oils, and adding to other non water based lotions or butters.
How to emulsify your oils:
- add your essential oils and emulsifier to your bottle (make sure you're using the correct oil dilution ratios). 1:1 ratio is usually perfect, but can change depending on the oils used. watched for separation.
- stir or shake them both together to combine.
- let them sit for at least 10 minutes - technically a couple of hours would be better if you have the time but if you're in a rush don't stress.
- combine with water and you're good to go.
